AmericanTV: Supergirl

Supergirl has a lot to prove. It is essentially a unicorn; with the exception of Marvel's Agent Carter on ABC, it's the only superhero series to be headlined by a female character. And like Peggy Carter, Supergirl has been underestimated by both her peers and her viewers. That proved to be a blessing in disguise for Kara when she took on her first real alien threat, and it may catch viewers by surprise, too.

The first look trailer that served as our initial introduction to the series back in May was a misrepresentation of the Supergirl series. It played more like a trailer for a romantic comedy, which is fine except the show is not a romantic comedy. There's action, there's humor, and there's plenty of room for smart analysis, but Kara isn't a bumbling heroine even if she was momentarily speechless in the presence of James Olsen. Every trailer released after that first one made it clear the series was a different beast than what the original’s fashion montage would have you believe. What that trailer did get right, however, was the decision to target young female viewers.
